ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with the UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Friday, during which the two sides reaffirmed their shared desire to further enhance mutually beneficial cooperation.

In a warm and cordial exchange, the Prime Minister and the UAE leader recalled their recent meetings in Islamabad and Rahim Yar Khan last month, marking the UAE President’s first official visit to Pakistan, the state media reported.

The Prime Minister thanked the UAE for its unwavering support, which has been crucial in helping Pakistan navigate difficult challenges, describing it as a testament to their historic and fraternal bonds.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation. They also discussed other matters of mutual interest and agreed to remain in close contact.

The UAE is Pakistan’s third-largest trading partner after China and the United States, and a major source of foreign investment, valued at over $10 billion in the last 20 years, according to the UAE foreign ministry.

It is also home to more than a million Pakistani expatriates who send back more than $5 billion in remittances to the South Asian country annually.

The two countries regularly engage in high-level diplomatic and economic dialogues to strengthen their strategic partnership and regional stability.

The relationship emphasises mutual support, economic growth, and shared development goals, reflecting a commitment to long-term collaboration.

In January 2024, Pakistan and the UAE signed multiple agreements worth more than $3 billion for cooperation in railways, economic zones, and infrastructure sectors.
