ISLAMABAD: Germany has underlined that it remains strategically closer to the United States than to China, even after a period of strain in transatlantic relations, signalling that security and political alignment continue to anchor Berlin’s foreign policy.

The position was articulated during a high-level international policy event in Singapore, attended by diplomats, officials, and a large international media presence, where Germany outlined its approach to managing relations among major global powers, reports Reuters.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said, “We are not equidistant. The United States remains our most important partner, particularly in matters of security and global stability. Differences with Washington have emerged, but they do not change the fundamental closeness of our partnership,” he added.

The remarks were intended to clarify Germany’s position amid heightened geopolitical competition among the world’s major powers. They also come amid questions about Europe’s long-term alignment as relations between the United States and some European allies face periodic tension.

Germany’s ties with China, by contrast, are described by officials as important but complex. China remains one of Germany’s largest trading partners, and economic links between the two countries are deep.

At the same time, Berlin has become more cautious about political dependence and the security risks associated with Beijing.

German officials say their approach reflects a broader European effort to reduce vulnerabilities without cutting economic ties. This strategy requires balancing the engagement with China against concerns over technology, supply chains, and geopolitical influence.

Analysts note that Germany’s position mirrors a wider trend across Europe. Many governments are trying to maintain commercial relations with China while reinforcing security cooperation with the United States and other allies.

The comments suggest Berlin wants to remove any ambiguity about its strategic orientation. For Germany, the message is that economic pragmatism with China does not outweigh the longstanding political and security bond with the United States.
