ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON DC: The US first lady, Jill Biden, had two cancerous growths removed successfully, a White House doctor said on Wednesday.
The White House doctor said that she was now considered to be in no danger.
According to the AFP, Jill Biden and President Joe Biden left for Walter Reed National Medical Centre in the suburbs of Washington for the outpatient procedure known as Mohs surgery on Wednesday early morning on the presidential helicopter.
Procedure to remove cancerous growth
According to White House physician Kevin O’Connor, Jill Biden suffered from post-operative pain for the cancerous procedure. “Despite facial bruising and swelling, she is in good spirits and in good health. Later today, she will return to the White House.”
Medical professionals initially planned the minor procedure to remove a lesion from the area around her right eye and to check if it was cancerous. “Basal cell carcinoma was identified during the operation as the small lesion. Successful removal of all tumor tissues, and absence of any skin cancer cells in the margins, “O’Connor wrote.
He continued, “We will observe the area while it heals, but we do not believe any more treatments will be required. The left side of Jill’s chest likewise had a tumor discovered by medical professionals; this one was cancerous and was also removed via the same procedure, he stated.
They discovered another “small tumour” on her left eyelid that was “completely removed, with margins, and was sent for standard microscopic investigation.”
Basal cell carcinoma lesions “don’t seem to spread or metastasis, like some more deadly skin tumours,” according to O’Connor. If performed early enough, the Mohs surgery, which is performed under local anaesthesia, is thought to be quite efficient at eliminating skin cancer cells.
More than six hours after the Bidens arrived at the hospital, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that “the first lady’s treatment is progressing well.”
During the prolonged hospital visit, Jean-Pierre questioned what the president was doing. “Today is about his wife, and that is the priority for the president right now.” She stated, “This is about the president standing by his wife of 45 years.”
The oldest first lady in American history is Jill Biden, 71, and the most senior president is her 80-year-old husband. She is believed to have a significant influence within the White House and would be vital to Biden’s reelection campaign, which he has hinted he may pursue but has not officially announced.
Joe Biden has a personal cause for the disease as his son Beau passed away from brain cancer in 2015. His “presidential priority” is lowering the disease’s mortality toll.
