RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has condemned the terrorist attack that targeted the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque during Friday prayers in the city of Homs in Syria, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry, in a statement, affirmed the Kingdom’s categorical rejection of terrorism and extremism in all their forms, including attacks on mosques and places of worship and the targeting of innocent civilians.

The ministry expressed the Kingdom’s solidarity with Syria in the wake of this tragic incident and reaffirmed its support for the Syrian government’s efforts to maintain security and stability.

It also extended sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of Syria, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured and expressing hope for continued peace and safety across the country.

“A terrorist explosion targeted the Ali Bin Abi Talib Mosque during Friday prayers in Al-Khadri Street in the Wadi al-Dahab neighbourhood of Homs,” the interior ministry of Syria said in a statement, adding that six people were killed and 21 others wounded.

The press office of Homs city reported that an explosive device detonated inside the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib mosque, prompting security forces to cordon off the area.

Since the former ruler of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, was removed from power in 2024, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and residents of Homs have reported a rise in kidnappings and killings targeting members of the Alawite minority.

Earlier this month, an attacker suspected of belonging to the Islamic State killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in central Syria, authorities said.
