ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has called for stability in the national team’s preparations, firmly dismissing the need for further experimentation in Pakistan’s national cricket team ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The mega-event is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8 next year, with Pakistan’s campaign set to open against the Netherlands.

Speaking at a local event, Afridi emphasised that the time for trials is over.

‘No More Experiments’

With a preparatory three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka on the horizon, Afridi stressed that the team management must now commit to a settled core.

“There is no need for further experimentation in the Pakistan cricket team ahead of the series before the World Cup,” Afridi stated. “The captain should be briefed that he has to move forward with the players included in the pool.”

BBL Participation a “Good Sign” for Exposure

Afridi also highlighted the value of Pakistani players gaining experience in overseas leagues.

He specifically termed participation in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) a crucial opportunity to acclimatize to local conditions, which will be beneficial for future tours.

“The participation of Pakistan players in the Big Bash League is a good sign. Players will learn about Australian conditions,” the 48-year-old said.

PSL Expansion Hailed as New Chapter

Turning to domestic cricket, Afridi praised the ongoing expansion of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), calling its roadshow evidence of the league’s popularity.

He hailed the inclusion of two new teams as a positive development for the country’s cricketing ecosystem.

“The PSL is our own brand, and the inclusion of two new teams will provide more opportunities for players,” he concluded.

The 2026 T20 World Cup will feature 20 teams divided into four groups, with the top two from each advancing to the Super Eight stage. Following their opener, Pakistan will look to navigate a tournament where hosts and reigning champions India begin their title defense against the USA in Mumbai.
