WASHINGTON: The US authorities on Tuesday charged an Afghan national in Texas with threatening to build a bomb and carry out a suicide attack, amid heightened scrutiny of Afghan migrants following a deadly shooting.

Mohammad Dawood Alokozay, 30, of Fort Worth, allegedly made the threats in a November 23 video that he shared on TikTok, X, and Facebook, the Justice Department said in a statement.

In the video, Alokozay allegedly praises the Taliban and threatens to carry out a suicide attack on Americans.

“Thanks to public reports of a threatening online video, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force apprehended this individual before he could commit an act of violence,” FBI Dallas special agent in charge Joseph Rothrock said.

“We have zero tolerance for violence and threats of violence to kill American citizens and others like those allegedly made by this individual,” said US Attorney Ryan Raybould for the Northern District of Texas.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that Alokozay “entered the United States during the Biden administration and, as alleged, explicitly declared that he came here to kill American citizens.”

If convicted of making a threatening interstate communication, he could face up to five years in prison.

Alokozay’s arrest comes just a week after a shooting near the White House in Washington left two National Guard members injured.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the attack, which resulted in the death of one soldier.

Lakanwal had previously served in a CIA-backed “partner force” fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan and entered the United States through a resettlement programme following the US military withdrawal in 2021.

US President Donald Trump said Sunday his administration intends to pause asylum decisions for “a long time” after the shooting.

“We don’t want those people,” he said on social media.

Pakistan on Friday strongly condemned the shooting near the White House in Washington, DC, calling the incident a “heinous assault” and a troubling sign of resurgent global terrorism.

In an official statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Office expressed deep condolences following the attack, which US authorities say involved an Afghan national. The statement urged the international community to “take note” of the evolving threat landscape and reinvigorate collective counter-terrorism efforts.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the departed soldier, and we wish the injured a swift and complete recovery,” the Foreign Office said. “We extend heartfelt sympathies to the families affected, as well as to the government and people of the United States.”
