ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have taken significant steps toward deepening maritime cooperation, exploring a formal framework to boost regional connectivity and trade, officials said Thursday.
The discussions took place on the sidelines of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly in London, where Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, met with Saudi Minister of Transport, Saleh Al Jasser. The talks focused on enhancing collaboration in shipping, port development, and maritime training.
Both sides reviewed existing partnerships and identified opportunities for private sector engagement, in line with Pakistan’s ambitious Maritime Vision 2047, which seeks to modernize port infrastructure, expand shipping capacity, and attract foreign investment.
Minister Chaudhry outlined three major proposals to strengthen bilateral maritime ties: a collaboration between the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation and Saudi Arabia’s Albehri Shipping Line; increased business-to-business engagement between maritime firms from both countries; and a potential sister-port agreement linking Karachi Port Trust with Jeddah Islamic Port to facilitate trade and technical exchange.
The Saudi delegation expressed readiness to share a draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) to formalize long-term maritime cooperation and provide a structured roadmap for regional collaboration.
Officials also highlighted growing interest from the Red Sea Gateway Terminal, a leading Saudi port operator, in exploring investments in Pakistan’s port infrastructure.
Training and capacity-building initiatives for Pakistani seafarers were also discussed, including potential onboard training placements on Saudi vessels to enhance skills and employment opportunities.
The dialogue reflects both nations’ renewed commitment to strengthening maritime connectivity and unlocking broader economic potential across the region.
