ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution reaffirming the country’s longstanding support for the Palestinian people, as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens with over 61,000 killed since October 7, 2023.
The move comes against the backdrop of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where an alarming death toll of over 61,000 Palestinians has been reported since Israel launched its ongoing military offensive on October 7, 2023.
The Israeli military’s relentless campaign has drawn strong condemnation from countries across the world, including Pakistan.
During the National Assembly’s, lower house of the country’s Parliament, session, lawmaker Shazia Marri presented the resolution that reaffirmed Pakistan’s historical and steadfast advocacy for Palestinian statehood.
“We must not turn a blind eye to the escalating Israeli military aggression in Gaza,” she stated, highlighting the tragic toll on civilians amidst widespread devastation of homes and livelihoods.
Recent revelations from Israeli media suggest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would announce a plan to completely occupy Gaza. This potential action raises alarming questions about the future of Palestinian sovereignty.
The National Assembly resolution strongly denounced the rhetoric and actions emanating from Israeli authorities, viewing them as harbingers of a long-term occupation strategy aimed at forcibly displacing populations and obliterating Palestinian identity.
It unequivocally condemned tactics such as siege, starvation, and collective punishment, terming these as war crimes under international law.
The National Assembly urged the United Nations and the international community to fulfil their moral and legal obligations by taking immediate measures to halt Israeli military operations in Gaza.
The resolution reinforced Pakistan’s commitment to advocating for the Palestinian cause on global platforms, including the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
