ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday held a telephone conversation with Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and discussed the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East.
He emphasised the importance of restoring peace through dialogue and diplomacy, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
He reiterated Pakistan’s support for Iran at all diplomatic forums, including at the UN Security Council and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), while calling for adherence to international law and the UN Charter principles by all sides.
President Pezeshkian thanked the Prime Minister for the telephone call and appreciated Pakistan’s consistent and principled support to Iran throughout the crisis.
He also acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The two leaders agreed on the importance of unity among the Ummah during this most challenging time. They agreed to remain in touch.
Iran-Israel ceasefire
A fragile ceasefire in the Iran-Israel war appeared to be holding on Tuesday, after 12 days of strikes that saw Israel and the United States pummel the Islamic Republic’s nuclear sites.
US President Donald Trump said that Israel and Iran had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire” soon after Iran launched a limited missile attack Monday on a US military base in Qatar.
In a fast-moving series of declarations, the US President, who was on his way to attend a NATO summit in The Hague, posted on his Truth Social app that “the Ceasefire is in effect!”
“ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly ‘Plane Wave’ to Iran. Nobody will be hurt,” Trump wrote.
Earlier, Pakistan expressed deep concern over the serious escalation in the regional security situation after attacks against the United States’ al Udeid Air base in Qatar.
In a statement, the Foreign Office said Pakistan strongly condemns the violations of the principle of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.
The Foreign Office urged adherence to fundamental principles of international law and called for exercise of restraint by all sides.
