ISLAMABAD: French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, in a telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday, welcomed the ceasefire understanding between Pakistan and India, emphasised the need for both sides to exercise restraint.

During the conversation, Isahq Dar informed him that Pakistan had shown restraint throughout the crisis and only exercised its right to self-defence, in line with the UN Charter and international law, said a statement issued by the foreign ministry.

Dar assured that Pakistan would continue to work in a responsible manner for maintaining regional peace and security.

Jean-Noël Barrot conveyed condolences over the loss of innocent lives. “Welcoming the ceasefire understanding between Pakistan and India, he emphasised the need for both sides to exercise restraint,” the statement said.

Both leaders agreed to maintain close contact, including through multilateral fora.

This high-level diplomatic engagement comes in the wake of a significant escalation between India and Pakistan.

In late April, an attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians.

Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos

India accused Pakistan and launched missile and drone strikes. Pakistan responded with Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, targeting Indian military installations.

Amidst mounting international concern, the United States brokered a ceasefire. Pakistan has consistently advocated for peace and regional stability.
