ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has heaped praise on Mohammad Amir, hailing him as one of the finest pacers Pakistan has ever produced.

At the same time, he criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its mishandling of talented players.

Speaking on a social media platform on Friday, Akhtar recalled a match against Australia where Amir’s swing bowling left David Warner completely unsettled.

“Warner was smashing me around, but as soon as Amir came on, he looked clueless. He couldn’t decide whether to move forward or back—he simply couldn’t read Amir’s swing or pace,” Akhtar said.

He continued, “The skill Amir possessed then is still evident today.”

Akhtar went on to call Amir the most intelligent fast bowler Pakistan has ever had.

“He’s brilliant when it comes to understanding the game—he reads match situations, adjusts field placements, and knows precisely which line and length to bowl. He sets the field tactically to back up his bowling.”

Match preparation

He also praised Amir’s meticulous match preparation, noting his unique routine.

“Amir always bowls three to four overs before every match, carefully assessing his performance. He doesn’t take part in the regular team warm-up; instead, he follows his own routine to fine-tune his skills.”

Describing Amir as a “valuable asset” for Pakistan cricket, Akhtar expressed frustration over how poorly players like him have been managed.

“The problem isn’t with the players—it lies with the management. If you can’t empathise with your players and understand their struggles, you’ve no business being in charge,” he stated.

Echoing Akhtar’s concerns, former pacer Sohail Tanvir also took aim at Pakistan cricket’s long-standing issues with player treatment.

“Many players have voiced that they weren’t given proper farewells or treated with dignity during their careers. This is an area that seriously needs improvement,” Tanvir remarked.

Mohammad Amir, who is currently featuring for Quetta Gladiators in the ongoing 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has taken six wickets in four matches.
