KEY POINTS

  • PCB is close to finalising Hesson’s appointment, with an official announcement expected post-PSL 10
  • Pakistan’s head coach’s position has remained vacant since Gary Kirsten’s exit in October 2024

ISLAMABAD: Following Pakistan’s recent struggles on the international cricket stage and the departure of interim coach Aaqib Javed, Islamabad United’s head coach Mike Hesson has emerged as the leading contender to take charge of the national team.

According to insider sources within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the appointment of the seasoned New Zealander as Pakistan’s full-time head coach is all but finalized, with an official announcement expected after the conclusion of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10.

Hesson, who guided Islamabad United to a PSL title victory last year, brings with him international and franchise cricket experience.

While PCB has reportedly initiated talks with a handful of candidates—including Australian Simon Katich, current New Zealand batting coach Luke Ronchi, and former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq—Hesson remains their top pick.

However, negotiations remain in the early stages. A PCB official, speaking anonymously, noted that Hesson is open to accepting the role, provided discussions progress smoothly.

Interestingly, all three coaches had previously declined offers from PCB due to prior commitments or concerns over job stability.

The latter remains a major hurdle for foreign coaches, as Pakistan’s coaching carousel has seen rapid exits.

Mickey Arthur and Grant Bradburn were shown the door just six months into their contracts following Pakistan’s early exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Jason Gillespie also left soon after a tour of Australia, while Gary Kirsten opted not to return after his post-T20 World Cup feedback was allegedly ignored.

Pakistan’s cricket performance has taken a hit in recent months. They finished last in the latest World Test Championship cycle after losing a Test to West Indies.

They couldn’t win a single match in the recent Champions Trophy and managed only one win in nine white-ball games during their tour of New Zealand in March-April 2025.

Since Gary Kirsten’s resignation, the coaching role has remained vacant, with Aaqib Javed temporarily filling in until his contract expired in February 2025.

While Saqlain Mushtaq remains in the mix, PCB appears most keen on handing the baton to Hesson, in hopes that his tactical acumen and calm leadership can steer Pakistan back on course.
