RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has made the meningitis vaccine mandatory for pilgrims intending to perform Hajj this year.
According to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, both Saudi nationals and foreign pilgrims must be vaccinated; otherwise, they will not be permitted to perform the pilgrimage.
The Ministry added that Hajj packages and registration will not be processed for those who have not received the meningitis vaccine.
This decision is aimed at preventing the spread of infectious diseases during Hajj. The Ministry emphasised that controlling the transmission of contagious diseases is essential to ensure the safety of all pilgrims.
It is pertinent to mention that last month the Saudi Ministry of Health stressed the necessity of receiving the meningitis vaccine for Umrah pilgrims during the holy month of Ramadan.
The ministry asked the pilgrims to get vaccinated at least 10 days prior to travelling to Saudi Arabia for Umrah to ensure adequate immunity.

Meningitis is the inflammation of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is usually caused by infection. It can be fatal and requires immediate medical care. Meningitis can affect people of any age.
In March last year, Saudi authorities mandated that all Haj and Umrah pilgrims receive a flu vaccination before their trips.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) also issued a notification requiring pilgrims to carry necessary health documents, including vaccination certificates.
