BRUSSELS: The European Union on Saturday said it had recalled its ambassador from Niger after developing differences with the government of the West African country.
“The EU has decided to recall its ambassador to Niamey for consultations in Brussels,” an EU spokesperson said.
Niger on Friday accused the EU ambassador of distributing $1.35 million in aid to non-governmental organisations in the country without first informing the local authorities. It had sought a clarification on the management of funds tributed to the NGOs.
Since taking power in a coup in July 2023, the Niger rulers have turned their backs on former colonial ruler of France.
In March this year, Niger had suspended its military agreement with the United States after a US delegation visited the country without informing the local authorities about the composition of the delegation, the date of its arrival or agenda.
Niger government’s spokesman Colonel Amadou Abdramane had said the visiting US delegation did not follow diplomatic protocol.
“Niger regrets the intention of the American delegation to deny the sovereign Nigerien people the right to choose their partners and types of partnerships capable of truly helping them fight against terrorism,” Abdramane said.
In June the Niger’s top court had revoked former President Mohamed Bazoum’s immunity, opening the door for potential legal proceedings following his removal in a July 2023 military takeover.
Accused of treason, terrorism financing, and undermining the state, Bazoum has been under house arrest with his wife since his ouster.
