DUBLIN, Ireland: Ireland solidified its recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state by appointing Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid as the first full Palestinian ambassador on Tuesday.

This marks a significant diplomatic move, following Ireland’s recognition of Palestinian statehood earlier in the year, covering the West Bank and Gaza Strip, reports Associated Press.

Alongside other European nations like Spain, Norway, and Slovenia, Ireland has voiced strong criticism of Israel’s responses to the Hamas attacks, further underscoring its stance.

Ireland’s official diplomatic relations with Palestine were established in September, and Abdalmajid’s appointment signifies an elevation of the Palestinian mission to a full embassy under the Vienna Convention of 1961, which provides comprehensive diplomatic privileges and immunities.

This change indicates Ireland’s commitment to Palestine’s representation and its broader political stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with similar diplomatic upgrades expected in other countries following Ireland’s example.
