ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has said that Parliament holds supreme authority in legislative matters.

Addressing a press conference here in the capital, Tarar said that the ‘Elections (Second Amendment) Bill, 2024,’ which was passed by both houses of the Parliament yesterday formalizes an existing rule that requires independent candidates to join a political party within a specified timeframe. This legislation converts that rule into law.

Tarar raised concerns about whether the affidavit submitted by independents to join a specific party could be invalidated, asserting that floor crossing is not permissible under the law and constitution.

In response to questions about negotiations with Jamaat-e-Islami, Tarar reported positive progress and announced that another round of talks would be held today.

He expressed confidence that these discussions would reach a successful conclusion, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing relief to the public.

Regarding the situation in Bangladesh, Tarar expressed solidarity with the Bangladeshi people, commending their resilience and courage. He drew a parallel between Sheikh Hasina Wajid and the PTI, alleging that both have sought foreign intervention, engaged in divisive politics, and been involved in corruption.

Tarar criticized Sheikh Hasina Wajid for seeking assistance from a country accused of severe human rights violations in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
