Peru’s President Impeached

LIMA: Vice president of Peru Dina Boluarte was sworn in on Wednesday as a new president of Peru after former president Castillo was removed from office.  

Peru has a woman president for the first time, following former president Pedro Castillo was impeached hours after he (Castillo) made attempt to dissolve the country’s parliament. 

Calls for political truce after former president impeached

After taking the oath as a new president, she said that there is a need for a political truce to resolve the country’s crisis. Peru Dina said that she will work as a president till July, 2026. She said, ” I take office of the president being aware of the huge responsibilities”. She called for a political agreement to form a government of national unity.

Earlier, Castillo said he was going to replace Congress with an emergency government. However, the legislators ignored his announcement, and in an emergency, session impeached him (Castillo).

According to BBC, following the impeachment, the former president was seen on police premises. However, it is unknown if he was arrested by the police. 

Former president Castillo is a left-wing former school teacher. He was elected as president in June 2021.
