TEHRAN, Iran: Iran denied on Wednesday that it was part of a plot to assassinate former US President Donald Trump, as claimed by US media. CNN reported that US authorities had received intelligence weeks ago from a “human source” about an alleged Iranian plot, leading to increased protection for Trump. Other US outlets also reported the alleged plot.
CNN clarified that the alleged plot was not connected to the recent shooting at a Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where Trump was wounded, and a supporter was killed. The US National Security Council stated it had been tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years, following Tehran’s vow for revenge over the 2020 killing of Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike in Iraq.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations dismissed the accusations as “unsubstantiated and malicious.” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani strongly denied Iran’s involvement in the recent attack on Trump but reiterated Iran’s determination to hold Trump accountable for Soleimani’s assassination. Soleimani, who led the foreign operations arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, was killed in a US-ordered drone strike near Baghdad airport.
