PENNSYLVANIA, USA: The former fire chief killed at a Pennsylvania rally for Donald Trump, Corey Comperatore, 50, spent his final moments protecting his family from gunfire during an assassination attempt against the former president. Comperatore, who served as chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, died a hero, diving in front of his wife and daughter to shield them from bullets.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed Comperatore’s heroic actions. “His wife shared with me that he dove on his family to protect them,” Shapiro said. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden extended their deepest condolences to Comperatore’s family. Biden praised Comperatore for his bravery, noting that he lost his life protecting his family.
The shooting occurred on Saturday at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where at least two others were injured. David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, were both listed in stable condition. Texas U.S. Representative Ronny Jackson also reported that his nephew was injured but fortunately, the injury was not serious. Jackson recounted how his nephew realized he had blood on his neck after hearing shots ring out.
The Secret Service neutralized the suspected shooter, who had attacked from an elevated position outside the venue. During the attack, Trump was showcasing a chart of border-crossing numbers when the shots were fired. He was seen holding his ear and getting down on the ground as agents quickly formed a protective shield around him. Despite being bloodied, Trump stood up and pumped his fist to cheering supporters.
Randy Reamer, president of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, described Comperatore as “a stand-up guy” and “a true brother of the fire service.” Comperatore had served as chief of the company for about three years and was a life member, indicating over 20 years of service. Assistant Chief Ricky Heasley of Sarver, who knew Comperatore for more than a decade, remembered him as very outgoing and full of life. “He never had a bad word,” Heasley said.
To honor Comperatore, a crew was power-washing the front of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company and preparing to install memorial drapery. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support Comperatore’s family had already raised over $180,000 in donations by Sunday.
Comperatore’s sacrifice and dedication to his family and community have left a lasting impact, with tributes pouring in from all corners. His heroism stands as a testament to his character and commitment to protecting others.
