DHAKA: Mushfiqur Rahim’s withdrawal from Bangladesh’s upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, set to commence in Sylhet on Friday, stems from a fractured thumb. Confirming this, Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan stated that Mushfiqur will need a minimum of three weeks to recuperate.
The injury occurred during the second over of the third ODI against Sri Lanka on Monday when the 36-year-old was struck by a delivery from Taskin Ahmed, injuring his right thumb. Despite the pain, Mushfiqur continued his wicketkeeping duties, eventually contributing a crucial unbeaten 37 runs in Bangladesh’s successful chase of 236 runs.
Post-match, an X-ray examination in Dhaka revealed an avulsion fracture on the MIP joint of his right thumb. Currently undergoing conservative management, Mushfiqur is anticipated to be out of action for approximately three to four weeks, effectively sidelining him from the Test series against Sri Lanka.
Mushfiqur’s absence presents a significant setback to Bangladesh’s batting lineup. With 88 Tests under his belt, he holds the record for the most appearances by any Bangladesh player, boasting 5676 runs at an average of 38.09. Moreover, his notable performance in the ODI series underscores his value to the team.
As selectors contemplate a replacement, options with substantial red-ball experience are limited. Candidates like Soumya Sarkar, Towhid Hridoy, Tanzid Hasan, Jaker Ali, and Anamul Haque are being considered, with Naeem Islam emerging as a potential choice despite his last Test appearance dating back to 2012. Naeem’s recent red-ball prowess, highlighted by his leading run-scoring performances in BCL 2023-24 and NCL 2023-24, adds weight to his candidacy.
Bangladesh’s Test series against Sri Lanka will kick off in Sylhet before shifting to Chattogram for the second Test scheduled to begin on March 30. Following a T20I series victory for Sri Lanka, Bangladesh claimed the ODI leg, setting the stage for an intriguing Test encounter.
