SIALKOT: Controversy has erupted over an incident allegedly involving Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, a leader of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), purportedly slapping a policeman on polling day, prompting an official inquiry. Currently, a two-member commission, led by retired Justice Akramullah from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is overseeing the investigation.
Awan has expressed regret and offered an apology to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). She explained that the policeman was obstructing her from casting her vote, leading her to file a complaint with the presiding officer, but her grievances were reportedly ignored.
A member of Punjab’s commission questioned the justification of resorting to physical violence if complaints were not addressed, which Awan denied. Despite her denial, the ECP presented video evidence in court, prompting Awan to request additional footage playback.
In response, a member of the Election Commission advised her to register complaints through proper channels. Police officials reported peaceful voting at most polling stations in the region, except for specific incidents. Firdous Ashiq Awan has been requested to provide a formal written response by February 15 regarding the alleged assault on the policeman.
