ISLAMABAD: A health expert emphasized the necessity for coordinated efforts on Monday, including awareness campaigns, to enhance the well-being of individuals grappling with diabetes. Speaking to a private news channel, Assistant Professor Dr Syed Muhammad Hassan expressed concern about the escalating diabetes levels in Pakistan, posing a significant challenge to the health and prosperity of individuals and families. He urged policymakers and health decision-makers to join forces in improving the lives of people with diabetes and preventing the condition in those susceptible to it.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Dr Hassan pointed out that Pakistan has approximately 34 million diabetic individuals, constituting 26.7% of the adult population aged 20-79, a figure significantly higher than the global average. He underscored the pressing issue of insulin shortages in various cities, warning that the current scenario could expose diabetics to heightened risks of complications, including heart attacks and kidney failures.
Responding to inquiries, Dr Hassan emphasized the significance of educating parents about early diagnosis and ensuring healthcare providers receive proper training for the timely and accurate identification of diabetes. He also stressed the need for children with diabetes to have easy access to free insulin and blood glucose monitoring equipment to facilitate better disease management.
