WASHINGTON: Two U.S. Navy personnel were reported missing at sea while carrying out operations off the coast of Somalia on Thursday evening, the U.S. military officials said in a statement.
The US military authorities said that the search and rescue operations is being carried out to locate the personnel. However, the military officials did not provide more details about the development.
According to the U.S. Central Command the Navy sailors were forward-deployed to the 5th Fleet area of operations supporting a wide variety of missions. The statement said that additional information would not be made available until the sailors’ recovery operation was complete. It added that out of respect for the affected families, they will not release more information at the movement.

The United States maintains a military presence in Somalia which focuses on the threat of a militant group, that has carried out assaults against the Somali government.
In addition to training Somali troops in the region, the US has coordinated with the government of Somalia to carry out strikes against militants, western media reported.
