World Bank, Uzbekistan Weigh Effective Water Resource Ruling Options: Report

TASHKENT: Uzbekistan and representatives of the World Bank have discussed methods of effective water resource management, local media reported on Saturday.

The discussion was held at a meeting between representatives of the World Bank and Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, Adiz Boboev.

The main topics of discussion were water supply initiatives, such as the application of modern water-saving technologies, well-organized water resource management, and means for metering water usage.

It was mentioned that president of Uzbekistan prioritizes the adoption of immediate steps to develop and modernize the sector.

Earlier, on January 5 of the current year, the Uzbek President had issued a decree titled “On Measures to Improve the Water Resources Management System at the lower level and also increase the Efficiency of Water Resources Use.

The WB’s representatives presented suggestions for the effective continuation of Uzbekistan’s reforms in this sector.

They also considered the current problems in Uzbekistan in this sphere, the management system, systemic methods to overcoming the issues, and international experience in this sector, in particular the experience of China, Türkiye, Pakistan, Egypt and Iran.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan has also allocated 22 trillion Uzbek soums from the budget for the upgrade of the water management system.

Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Resources, Shavkat Khamrayev said it is planned to allocate another 1.7 trillion soums  and additional loans in the amount of $300 million from global financial organizations for the improvement of water management systems in the current year.
