Iran, Sudan Agree to Restore Diplomatic Ties

TEHRAN: Iran and Sudan have agreed to resume diplomatic ties, a joint statement said on Monday.

The statement said the development comes seven years after both states severed ties and three months after a meeting between their foreign ministers.

Sudan, that grapples devastating war, cut diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016.

According to the statement Iran and Sudan decided to restore their diplomatic ties with a consensus to take the necessary measures to open their embassies in the near future and to exchange official delegations.

The Sudanese foreign ministry said the decision came after a number of high-level meetings between the two countries and will serve their mutual interests.

Meanwhile Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the two sides agreed to enhance cooperation on different areas which can fulfill the interests of both nations and ensure security and stability in the region.

It also said that the restoration of relations will be based on mutual respect for the sovereignty of each other and will serve the interests of the two countries and peaceful coexistence as well.
