Saudi Arabia Denounces Terrorist Attack in Niger

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has strongly condemed the terrorist attack in Niger that killed 29 soldiers, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement expressed its strong of the incident, which targeted security forces on Monday and resulted in the tragic loss of 29 soldiers’ lives, with many others seriously injured.

The ministry also conveyed its heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and to Niger. It reiterated the Kingdom’s unwavering support for Niger and its complete rejection of all forms of terrorism, violence, and extremism, regardless of their motives.

Niger’s defense minister, Lt. Gen. Salifou Mody said on Monday that more than 100 extremists used homemade explosives in the assault on security forces in the border region of the country. It was the second such attack on Niger’s soldiers in a week.

A jihadist insurgency has affected Africa’s Sahel region for more than a decade, starting in northern Mali in 2012 before spreading to neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso in 2015.
