LONDON: The government has backed Martha’s rule, a campaign to give families and patients the right to a second assessment if they feel their concerns are not being taken seriously.
Health secretary Steve Barclay said that ministers are “committed” to implementing the rule, insisting the case for it is “compelling”.
Tragically, Martha Mills passed away due to sepsis while under the care of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in South London.
A coroner’s investigation last year concluded that had medical professionals recognized the warning signs and transferred her to intensive care sooner, the 13-year-old would likely have survived.
Martha had been receiving treatment at King’s following a pancreatic injury sustained during a family vacation in Wales, as King’s serves as a specialized national referral centre for children with pancreatic issues.
