KABUL, Afghanistan: The Afghan Taliban regime is recruiting and preparing children, including as young as 10 years old, for military purposes and ideological indoctrination. This represents one of the most serious forms of child exploitation, stripping Afghan children of their right to education, safety and a normal childhood.

Weaponising and radicalising children is not merely a moral failure. It is a direct assault on Afghanistan’s future. Any generation raised on violence is likely to perpetuate instability and conflict for decades.
Such practices constitute grave violations of international humanitarian and human rights law. Recruitment or use of children in armed conflict is prohibited under international legal frameworks, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocol, while use of children under 15 in hostilities may constitute a war crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
Militarisation of children demonstrates that the Taliban regime continues to prioritise ideological warfare over welfare, education and development of Afghan youth.
The international community cannot afford silence over such grave violation of human rights. Child recruitment warrants independent investigation, accountability and sustained international pressure to protect Afghan children from exploitation and radicalisation.
Taliban regime’s systematic radicalisation begins long before the battlefield. By exposing children to distorted and perverted interpretations of religion, they replace education, critical thinking and tolerance with extremism, hatred and unquestioning obedience.

Weaponisation of young minds robs Afghan children of independent thought, normal psychological development and freedom to choose their own future.
Every child forced into a cycle of indoctrination and conflict represents not only a stolen childhood but also another obstacle to Afghanistan’s long-term peace, stability and reconstruction.
Following their 2021 return to power, the Taliban regime has shifted child recruitment from localised insurgency tactics to a systematic state-level policy, utilising specialised madrassas to militarise youth.
This state-sanctioned indoctrination aims to embed extremist ideology early, replacing formal education with radical training and violating international human rights laws.
The regime has furthered this agenda by banning girls from secondary education and converting boys’ schooling into radicalised environments, creating a generation of child soldiers.
