LONDON: British MP Tobias Ellwood has resigned from the post of chairperson of a Commons committee following a severe criticism to his remarks he made after a visit to Afghanistan praising Taliban, Western media reported on Wednesday.

He posted a video on social media in July, describing Afghanistan as a country transformed after Taliban takeover in August 2021.

He added that security in Afghanistan has been improved, corruption is decreased and the opium trade has disappeared.

The former defense minister did not mention about the situation of women’s rights in the country.

Afghan women, military veterans, and several members of the committee have criticized Ellwood’s remarks.

He resigned from the post on Wednesday, the day before a vote of no confidence was likely to take place.

Ellwood after the resignation admitted he was guilty of bad communications regarding his comments.  He said majority of committee members wants him to continue to serve as its chairperson.

The MP tried to cool down the situation by deleting the video and issuing an apology in which he said his visit could have been presented in much better way and his comments are taken out of context.
