ISLAMABAD: India’s iconic batsman Virat Kohli has reportedly informed the BCCI of his intent to retire from Test cricket, with the upcoming five-match series in England on the horizon.
The 36-year-old has held discussions with senior BCCI officials over the past month about stepping away from the longest form of the game — a format he once dominated and helped transform as captain, according to the Hindustan Times.
If he proceeds with the decision, it would mark the conclusion of a stellar Test career spanning over 14 years.
Having already retired from T20 internationals in 2024 after India’s World Cup victory, Kohli’s potential departure from red-ball cricket would further signify the end of an era, especially following Rohit Sharma’s recent retirement from the format.
New Test skipper
While there are still indications that Kohli may be named in the squad for the England tour due to his wealth of experience, confirmation is yet to be received.
His involvement could prove crucial during a period of transition, with India expected to travel under a new Test skipper.
Kohli’s Test record includes 123 matches and 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, with a notable leadership spell across 68 Tests.
However, his form in recent years has dipped, averaging 32.56 over the past two years, despite registering a century in Perth late in 2024.
He remains part of the BCCI’s elite A+ central contract group, typically reserved for all-format players.
But with T20Is already behind him and doubts over his Test future, it appears his focus may be shifting.
The England-India Test series is set to begin on 20 June at Headingley, Leeds, followed by fixtures at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval.
