ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE: The White House Wednesday said it had seen no indications Moscow was ready to use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine.
The statement comes in response to President Vladimir Putin threatening that he was ready to deploy nukes if Russia’s sovereignty was threatened.
Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Russia’s rhetoric on the subject of nukes has been “reckless” ever since it invaded Ukraine in start 2022.
“We have not seen any reasons to adjust our own nuclear posture, nor any indication that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine,” said Jean-Pierre when asked about Russian leader’s comments.
Putin appeared to be “restating Russia’s nuclear doctrine” after he was asked during an interview about using the weapons, the Press Secretary told media traveling with president Biden on a campaign trip to Milwaukee.
“Nevertheless, Russia’s nuclear rhetoric has been reckless and irresponsible throughout this conflict,” she said further.
“It was Russia that brutally invaded Ukraine without provocation or justification, and we’ll continue to support Ukraine as they defend their people and their territory from Russian aggression.”
President Putin on Wednesday praised Russia’s nuclear arsenal and warned that Russia is ready to deploy nuclear weapons if its sovereignty is threatened.
The Kremlin has furthered its nuclear capabilities through a two-year offensive in Ukraine. Putin’s latest comments came just days before Russian elections expected to give him another six years in power.
Biden on Tuesday announced a $300 million emergency arms package to support Ukraine in the wake of recent Russian advances, as the US Congress blocked further aid.
