WASHINGTON: According to reports, the United States is running low on ammunition stocks after providing billions of dollars in military help to Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

Sullivan told CNN that President Joe Biden “discovered that overall stocks of 155 munition, which is the NATO standard ammunition used for artillery rounds, were relatively low.”

He also stated that the administration discovered that replenishing supplies to acceptable levels would take years, not months.

“President Biden directed his Pentagon to work quickly to increase the United States’ capacity to produce all the ammunition we could ever need for any conflict at any time,” Sullivan said, adding, “Month after month, we are increasing our capacity to supply ammunition.”

According to the German research agency Kiel agency for the World Economy, the US has directed more than $75 billion in humanitarian, financial, and military assistance to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022.

Between January 24, 2022, and May 31, 2023, the United States provided $46.6 billion in military aid to Ukraine, which was divided into security assistance: training, equipment, weapons, logistics support, and other assistance provided through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative; weapons and equipment: weapons and equipment from Defence Department stocks provided through presidential drawdowns; and grants and loans for weapons and equipment: grants and loans provided through the Foreign Military Sales programme.

Infantry guns, air defence, air-to-ground missiles, manned aircraft, drones, artillery, tanks and armoured vehicles, coastal defence, ground support vehicles, radar, and communications were among the weapons and equipment obtained from the US arsenal.
