LOS ANGELES: American actor James Handy has died after being stabbed at his Los Angeles residence, authorities said.
The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Michael Gladel, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, was arrested in connection with the incident.
According to media reports, the 81-year-old actor was attacked on June 3 at his home. Police responded to an emergency call that morning and found Handy unconscious with a stab wound to the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Gladel was taken into custody at the scene and reportedly admitted responsibility for the attack. Officials said an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing.
Media reports indicate that Gladel lived with his mother, who was reportedly in a relationship with Handy.
James Handy began his acting career in 1977 and went on to appear in a wide range of Hollywood films and television productions over several decades. He was widely recognised for his roles in blockbuster films such as Top Gun: Maverick and Jumanji, as well as numerous supporting roles that showcased his versatility as a character actor.
Throughout his career, Handy also appeared in popular TV series, earning praise for his memorable performances in shows spanning drama, action, and comedy. Known for his professionalism and dedication to his craft, he built a reputation as a reliable and talented actor whose work left a lasting impression on audiences and colleagues alike.
Writer Jay Bobbin, paying tribute, said he was “heartbroken to learn about the passing of superb character actor”.
Writer and producer Don Winslow, creator of the 2001 procedural drama UC: Undercover, in which Handy appeared, praised him as a “terrific actor.”
“We were honoured to have him on UC: Undercover in a recurring role,” Winslow said. “His performances were always special.”
