UNHCR Chief, Pakistan’s Deputy PM Discuss Afghan Refugee Support

ISLAMABAD: The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar today to discuss a range of global refugee issues, focusing particularly on Afghan refugees.

During the meeting, they also reviewed the longstanding cooperation between Pakistan and UNHCR.

Grandi praised Pakistan’s enduring hospitality in hosting millions of Afghan refugees over decades, highlighting it as a remarkable example of the country’s generosity.

He briefed Deputy Prime Minister Dar on UNHCR’s current initiatives and stressed the importance of sustained collaboration between Pakistan and the UNHCR.

Deputy Prime Minister Dar shared Pakistan’s perspective and priorities regarding Afghan refugees, emphasizing that new humanitarian challenges globally should not overshadow the ongoing needs of millions of Afghans. He reiterated the importance of international solidarity and adherence to the principle of shared responsibility in addressing refugee issues.

Both Deputy Prime Minister Dar and High Commissioner Grandi agreed to continue their close cooperation to provide necessary assistance to Afghan refugees and to work towards sustainable solutions for their safe and dignified return.
