KYIV, Ukraine: Ukraine is expanding the use of robots and drones in combat operations, signalling a shift in modern warfare as machines increasingly replace soldiers in high-risk missions.

On the battlefield, Ukrainian forces have begun deploying ground-based robotic systems alongside aerial drones to carry out tasks ranging from surveillance to direct combat. In some cases, positions have been captured without infantry involvement, with remotely operated systems taking the lead.

“The position was taken without a single shot being fired,” said Mykola “Makar” Zinkevych, a commander in Ukraine’s robotic warfare unit.

The use of such technology has grown rapidly during the conflict, with officials saying robots are now regularly used for evacuating casualties, delivering supplies and engaging enemy targets. Their ability to operate in difficult conditions and carry heavier payloads has made them a valuable addition to frontline operations.

Dangerous areas

President Volodymyr Zelensky said drones and robots had carried out more than 22,000 missions in recent months, helping to reduce risks to personnel.

“Lives were saved more than 22,000 times when a robot went into the most dangerous areas instead of a warrior,” he said.

Experts say the technology is reshaping battlefield dynamics, though challenges remain. Ground robots can struggle to hold territory without human support, but they are proving effective in support roles and targeted operations.

Ukrainian officials aim to further expand their use, with plans to replace a significant portion of frontline troops with robotic systems. Analysts say the rapid adoption of such technology could influence military strategies globally in the years ahead.
