DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates said on Monday that Iran launched a fresh barrage of missiles and drones targeting the country, with air defence systems intercepting the incoming threats.

The UAE Ministry of Defence said four cruise missiles were detected heading towards “various areas across the country”, adding that three were successfully intercepted over territorial waters while one fell into the sea.

State news agency Emirates News Agency (WAM) also cited the ministry as saying that air defences were engaging missile and drone threats originating from Iran.

“The Ministry of Defence confirms that the sounds heard in various parts of the country are the result of the UAE air defence systems intercepting ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones,” the ministry said in a statement on X.

Meanwhile, Iranian state television said that Tehran had “no plans” to target the United Arab Emirates, after the UAE accused Iran of fresh attacks.

A senior Iranian military official said “Iran had no plans to target the UAE”, state TV reported, after the UAE said it had been targeted by a fresh Iranian barrage on Monday.

In an earlier update, the ministry said three “loitering munitions” were intercepted over territorial waters, while a fourth projectile fell into the sea.

The ministry urged the public to rely on official sources and adhere to safety instructions issued through emergency alerts.

Authorities had earlier sent warnings to residents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, advising them to seek shelter in the nearest secure building due to potential missile threats.

There was no immediate confirmation from Iranian state media regarding the reported strikes.

Fire at Fujairah energy site

Meanwhile, a drone strike caused a fire at an energy installation in the emirate of Fujairah, authorities said.

“Fujairah Civil Defence teams immediately responded to the incident and are continuing their efforts to control it,” the Fujairah Media Office said in a statement

The media office added that emergency crews were working to contain the blaze.

Fujairah hosts key oil infrastructure, including a major port and pipeline network that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said it had received a report of a fire aboard a cargo vessel approximately 36 nautical miles north of Dubai.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but all crew members were reported safe.

UKMTO also noted a separate incident west of Mina Saqr, though no further details were immediately available.
