MOSCOW: In a tragic incident in Russia’s Kaliningrad region on Saturday, a Russian Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jet crashed during a routine training mission, resulting in the loss of both pilots on board. The aircraft went down in an uninhabited area, according to an official statement by the Russian Defense Ministry. The ministry attributed the crash to a technical malfunction.
The Sukhoi Su-30, a prominent military aircraft utilized extensively during Russia’s involvement in Ukraine, is specifically designed for tasks such as air target destruction, airspace control, and aerial reconnaissance.
Local military authorities confirmed that the Su-30 was not carrying any ammunition at the time of the crash. Tragically, both crew members lost their lives due to the technical malfunction. The crash site was located in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, positioned between NATO member states Poland and Lithuania.
This incident follows a series of crashes involving Russian military aircraft, some of which observers have attributed to the heightened operational tempo amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Last month alone, two Russian fighter jets crashed during separate training missions – one in the Pacific and another in the Sea of Azov.
Russia Foils Ukrainian Drone Attacks
Amidst this backdrop, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that it had successfully thwarted an attempted attack involving 20 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow-annexed Crimea overnight. According to the ministry, Russian air defenses managed to shoot down 14 of the drones, while the remaining six were electronically jammed. Thankfully, no casualties or damage were reported as a result of the thwarted attack.
Although Kyiv officials neither confirmed nor denied Ukraine’s involvement in the attacks, tensions remain high in the region. The annexed Crimean peninsula’s Moscow-appointed governor, Sergei Aksyonov, reported that Russian air defense also successfully intercepted and downed two Ukrainian missiles in an attempted attack on the crucial bridge connecting Crimea and Russia.
While the bridge itself sustained no damage, the attempted assaults underscored the bridge’s strategic significance to Moscow. It serves as a crucial conduit for both military and civilian supplies and is emblematic of Russia’s control over the contested region.
Recent weeks have witnessed an uptick in drone attacks on both Moscow and Crimea, escalating the conflict’s tensions. These attacks have served to unsettle Russians and underscore the consequences of the ongoing conflict.
In a separate development, Russia announced that it had regained control of the village of Urozhaine in Ukraine’s easternmost Luhansk region through an overnight counterattack. The conflict’s toll was further highlighted by the unfortunate death of a 73-year-old woman in Russian shelling in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, along with additional casualties resulting from a guided Russian aerial bomb in the city of Orikhiv.
