RANGIA, India: Two police personnel were shot dead and two others injured after a colleague opened fire at a border outpost in India’s northeastern Assam state, officials said on Thursday.
The incident took place at the Gamerimura Police Outpost in the Boko area of Kamrup district, along the Assam-Meghalaya border, according to Indian media reports.
The accused constable, identified as Chiranjib Choudhury, allegedly opened fire with an AK-type service rifle, killing two colleagues, police officials cited by Indian media said.
The dead were identified as Indrajit Bora, the officer in charge of the Gamerimura outpost, and Fazrul Ali, a police constable, according to police officials. Two other police personnel were wounded in the shooting and taken for medical treatment.
Boko police station Officer-in-Charge Munna Pachani said police rushed to the outpost after receiving reports of gunfire. “The accused has been detained and interrogation is underway. The motive behind the incident is yet to be ascertained,” Pachani said.
According to Indian media reports, the firing occurred inside the two-storey outpost in Gamerimura market, where police personnel had been deployed to maintain security in the border area. The reports said the gunfire caused panic among local residents.
Some local sources, cited by Indian media, have suggested that the personnel were playing a local game before an altercation broke out.
Part of wider pattern of shootings in India
The Assam incident comes amid several recent cases in which Indian security personnel have opened fire on colleagues.
In July 2026, two Border Security Force personnel were killed and another injured after a colleague seized a rifle and opened fire at a BSF camp in West Bengal’s Malda district. Preliminary inquiries in that case reportedly pointed to possible severe mental distress.
In April 2025, a Bihar Police constable shot and killed a colleague inside police barracks in Bettiah following an argument, according to police.
In February 2025, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel opened fire at colleagues at a camp in Manipur, killing two and injuring eight before taking his own life, according to Manipur Police.
The repeated incidents have raised questions about psychological pressures among personnel in India’s police and paramilitary forces.
