WASHINGTON: Donald Trump is set to address the nation on Wednesday night to deliver what the White House described as an “important update” on the war in Iran.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the address on social media but did not provide further details. The remarks are scheduled for 9:00 pm ET.

Trump said in an interview with NBC that the conflict is “coming to an end”, adding later that the United States could leave Iran within two to three weeks and that a deal with Tehran was not necessary to conclude the war.

His comments followed earlier statements suggesting progress in potential negotiations, alongside warnings of further action against Iranian infrastructure if an agreement to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz is not reached.

Iranian officials have denied that any formal talks are underway.

The conflict, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran, is now entering its second month.

According to NBC, quoting a US official, 13 American service members have been killed and nearly 350 injured since the start of the military campaign.

The war has also driven up fuel prices in the United States, with average petrol costs rising above $4 per gallon, the highest level since 2022, amid disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supplies.

Public frustration over rising costs has grown, with polls indicating dissatisfaction among voters over the administration’s handling of the economy.

Trump’s last prime-time address to the nation was in December, when he defended his economic record.
