WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has indicated that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains the central objective of ongoing diplomatic efforts, as high-level negotiations aimed at a permanent resolution to the Iran–United States conflict are set to take place in Islamabad.
Speaking in remarks circulated by the White House Rapid Response account, Trump stated that “no nuclear weapon” accounts for “99%” of what would constitute a successful agreement.

Trump signaled uncertainty over the future of ongoing diplomatic discussions, saying he will wait to see the outcome of the next round of talks before committing to further engagement.
When asked whether the meeting would be a “one-and-done” effort or part of a longer negotiation process, Trump responded: “I have to see what happens tomorrow. They’ve been talking for 47 years with other Presidents — and we’re not doing much talking.”
His remarks underscore a skeptical stance toward prolonged diplomatic engagements, suggesting a preference for results-driven negotiations rather than extended dialogue.
He further commented on the evolving geopolitical situation, suggesting that “they’re militarily defeated” and referencing plans to “open up the [Strait],” in comments widely interpreted as relating to strategic maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Fox News, the US President reiterated that the “number one” priority in any deal with Iran is ensuring it remains free of nuclear weapons.
Separately, posts from political monitoring accounts suggested that Trump has effectively confirmed the “Islamabad talks,” set to take place, describing them as an important diplomatic engagement.

The discussions are being closely watched as part of broader efforts to reduce regional tensions.
While official details remain limited, the convergence of statements points to renewed diplomatic momentum, with Islamabad emerging as the facilitator and central venue for negotiations that could shape the next phase of US-Iran relations.
