WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has predicted a major agreement with Russia that could extend beyond the war in Ukraine to involve the whole of Europe, following an unscheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy at the White House.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump confirmed that he had met Kirill Dmitriev, who was at the White House for discussions with Ukrainian officials hosted by US First Lady Melania Trump.

“I can’t tell you what I discussed. But I’m just telling you, it’s going to be an agreement, it’s going to be a big agreement,” Trump said. Describing the potential deal as “very big”, he added that it would involve more than Ukraine and could even include “all of Europe”.

“It’s going to be a big, beautiful agreement, and everyone’s going to be thrilled,” he said. Trump clarified that he had not personally met the Ukrainian officials who were also present at the White House.

Earlier, Melania Trump called for a new and more lasting ceasefire in Ukraine as she hosted an unusual meeting between Ukrainian and Russian officials at the White House.

She said efforts to secure a six-day localised truce in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, announced last month, could help pave the way for a broader ceasefire agreement.

Meanwhile, US envoy Jared Kushner said Washington, NATO, Ukraine and European partners had held productive and substantive discussions on resolving the conflict ahead of further talks between Kyiv and Moscow scheduled for next week in Abu Dhabi.

In a statement posted on X, Kushner described the discussions as constructive, signalling continued diplomatic efforts to find a way towards ending the war.

Separately, the NATO-Ukraine Council held an extraordinary meeting at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels on Thursday to discuss Ukraine’s urgent defence requirements ahead of the winter season.

The meeting was chaired by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and included Ukrainian officials Sergiy Boyev, who attended in person, and Serhii Sobko, who participated via video conference.

Ukraine’s Mission to NATO said it was essential to mobilise international partners, accelerate decisions and turn previously announced commitments into actual deliveries of military equipment or financial assistance.

It said the meeting provided an opportunity to brief allies on the scale and nature of Russian threats and outline Ukraine’s immediate and longer-term defence requirements.

The discussions also came ahead of the next Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting, scheduled for November 17 under the leadership of the United Kingdom and Germany.

The parallel diplomatic and military engagements underscore continuing international efforts to secure a settlement to the conflict while maintaining military support for Ukraine.
