WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has commended Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his leadership during the ongoing conflict with Russia, saying Kyiv continues to resist despite the prolonged and costly war.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump said Zelensky had demonstrated determination in the face of Russia’s military campaign and was managing to withstand significant pressure on the battlefield.

“He’s doing pretty well. He’s holding his own, at least,” Trump remarked, acknowledging the heavy human toll the conflict has taken on both sides. He also praised Ukrainian troops, describing them as capable and committed fighters equipped with advanced military support.

Trump’s comments mark a notable shift in tone from previous remarks in which he questioned Ukraine’s ability to prevail against Russia. His latest assessment comes as military analysts suggest Ukrainian forces have stabilised parts of the front line and continue to mount resistance, although Russian missile and drone attacks remain a persistent threat to cities and civilian infrastructure.

The remarks followed Trump’s recent meeting with Zelensky on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, where leaders discussed ways to increase pressure on Moscow and advance efforts aimed at ending the conflict, now entering its fifth year.

Following the meeting, Zelensky expressed appreciation for Trump’s engagement on the issue, saying he was grateful for the US president’s attention to Ukraine and willingness to support initiatives that could help bring peace closer.

Trump signals possible tougher action against Russia

Trump also signalled a renewed openness to tougher measures against Russia, including the possibility of restoring sanctions targeting Russian oil exports. The issue has been closely watched by European allies, particularly after Washington previously granted and later extended a waiver covering Russian oil shipments already in transit, a move that raised concerns among some Western partners.

The war between Russia and Ukraine remains one of the most significant security challenges facing Europe, with diplomatic efforts continuing alongside intense fighting on the ground and repeated attacks on civilian areas.
