DAMASCUS: Syria has condemned in the strongest terms the Houthi militia’s targeting of Makkah with drones, stressing that targeting the holy city or its surroundings or endangering the safety of pilgrims, citizens, and residents constitutes a grave violation of the sanctity of holy sites and an affront to Muslims’ sentiments.
In a statement, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates expressed Syria’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia in confronting threats from the Houthi militia and support for any decision the Kingdom takes to safeguard its security.
The ministry stressed the need to respect the sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques and shield them from the repercussions of regional conflicts.
On Friday, the UN Security Council strongly condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, affirming the Kingdom’s inherent right to defend itself under international law and expressing solidarity with Riyadh in protecting its people, territory and critical infrastructure.

In a statement, UN Security Council members condemned continued Houthi attacks against Saudi territory, affecting civilian and energy infrastructure that have injured civilians, including women and children.
The council affirmed “the inherent right of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to self-defence in accordance with international law” and expressed solidarity with Riyadh in the face of attacks affecting civilians and civilian objects.
The council also condemned attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.
It called on the Houthis to respect international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and uphold freedom of navigation through the strategically important maritime corridor.
Security Council members called for practical cooperation with Yemen’s internationally recognised government to enforce the arms embargo imposed on the Houthis under Resolution 2216.
The measures are intended to prevent the group from obtaining weapons, training and financing that could enable further attacks.
