LOS ANGELES: Spain reached the FIFA World Cup semi-finals after a late Mikel Merino goal sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium in Friday’s quarter-final at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
The European champions will now face France in a blockbuster semi-final in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday after surviving a difficult test in hot conditions.
Spain took the lead in the 30th minute through Fabian Ruiz, who finished with composure after finding space in Belgium’s defensive third.
Belgium responded strongly and equalised in the 41st minute through Charles De Ketelaere. It was the first goal Spain had conceded in the tournament.
The match appeared to be heading towards extra time before Spain struck in the 88th minute. Pau Cubarsi fired from distance, and Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to hold the shot, allowing substitute Merino to react quickly and score from the rebound.
The goal was another decisive moment for Merino, who had also scored the winner against Portugal in the last 16.
Lammens had come on after first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was injured in the second half. Courtois later consoled him at full-time.
Lamine Yamal was named player of the match after growing into the game and causing problems on Belgium’s right side.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente described the upcoming clash with France as a “final before the final.”
