ISLAMABAD: According to United Nations’ emergency response agency said Thursday, around 30,000 civilians had been forced to flee their homes in a South Sudan region that is plagued by clashes based on ethnicity.
As per the statement by the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), on December 24 weapons wielding men from Jonglei state had attacked neighborhoods in Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
A few weeks ago, clashes occurred in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state.
Violence particularly affects vulnerable groups of people
According to UN humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan Sara Beysolow Nyanti, the most vulnerable groups of civilians including women, elderly, and children along with disabled persons had borne the brunt of the violence.
Partners from around the globe including the regional IGAD bloc and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), said in a collective press release Thursday that they were extremely concerned by the heightening unrest.
