LONDON: The number of migrants reaching the United Kingdom in small boats has now exceeded 200,000 since official records began in 2018, according to the latest government statistics.

The milestone comes amid growing political tension over immigration, with the anti-immigration Reform UK party gaining momentum in Thursday’s local elections, where national issues such as border control featured prominently.

Home Office figures released on Saturday confirmed that 70 people arrived in a single boat on Friday alone. The northern French coastline remains the primary departure point for migrants attempting the dangerous crossing to Britain, typically using small, overcrowded and unseaworthy inflatable vessels.

The latest arrival raised the total number of recorded crossings to 200,013. This figure is compiled from official government data covering the period between 2018 and 2025, alongside provisional estimates for the current year.

The issue is increasingly politically sensitive for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose government is facing mounting pressure to reduce irregular migration. His Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood has suggested tightening asylum protections and removing automatic access to certain benefits for asylum seekers as part of wider policy reforms.

Human cost data highlights the dangers of the crossing, with at least 29 migrants reported dead at sea in 2025 based on combined British and French official sources. A further six deaths have already been recorded so far this year.

In response to rising crossings, Britain and France signed a new three-year agreement last month aimed at curbing irregular migration.

Under the deal, France has committed to strengthening law enforcement efforts along its northern coast, while the UK has pledged hundreds of millions of euros in support funding.

Despite these measures, crossings remain persistent. Last year alone, 41,472 migrants successfully reached England’s southern coastline after making the perilous journey across the Channel from France.
