ISLAMABAD: A senior Shia religious leader, Allama Arif Hussain Wahidi, has urged restraint and peaceful conduct in protests held over the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader, noting that while the demonstrations were rooted in matters of belief and grief, violence observed in some areas was regrettable.
In a video statement, he said that the protests reflected genuine public sentiment and emotional attachment, but emphasised that leadership had consistently advised demonstrators to remain peaceful and avoid any form of violence or incitement.
He acknowledged that in certain locations, emotional reactions may have contributed to unrest. However, he expressed concern that “masked elements” and individuals allegedly with disruptive intent had also been seen in some incidents, calling for a thorough investigation into their role.
Referring specifically to Gilgit-Baltistan, Wahidi said he was well-acquainted with the region and remained in contact with locals. He described the people of Gilgit-Baltistan as patriotic, highlighting their long-standing support for Pakistan, including the presence of graves of Pakistan Army soldiers marked with national flags in local cemeteries.
He added that despite this strong sense of patriotism, some individuals in the region became agitated, leading to isolated incidents of unrest.
Wahidi reiterated that such protests should always remain peaceful, stressing that violence, provocation, and disorder ultimately harm the country. He urged both protesters and authorities to prioritise national unity and stability.
He further called on relevant institutions to conduct a proper and transparent inquiry into the incidents, so that facts could be established and any wrongdoing addressed appropriately.
Concluding his remarks, the cleric emphasised that safeguarding the country’s peace and maintaining harmony among citizens should remain the foremost priority, alongside ensuring that legitimate grievances are expressed in a responsible manner.
