ISLAMABAD: Veteran journalist Amjad Aziz Malik has made history as the first Pakistani to receive the ‘Lifetime Honorary Membership’ from the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), a prestigious honour underscoring Pakistan’s growing prominence in global sports journalism.

Recognition at 88th AIPS Congress in Lausanne

The honour was bestowed during the 88th AIPS Congress held in Lausanne, Switzerland, known globally as the Olympic Capital, where media professionals from 111 nations gathered for a key forum on international sports media.

With this achievement, Malik, who also serves as President of the Pakistan Sports Writers Federation (PSWF), has been welcomed into the AIPS Executive Committee as a Lifetime Honorary Member. No Pakistani has ever received this distinction in the association’s 102-year history.

Journalists from Japan, Spain, Malta, Brazil, and Turkey were also recognised alongside Malik for their lifelong dedication to sports reporting.

A career of excellence and dedication

Malik’s career spans several decades, marked by integrity, commitment, and a passion for excellence in sports journalism. His efforts have not only boosted Pakistan’s profile on the global sports media map but have also raised professional standards at home.

Earlier, the Government of Pakistan honoured him with the Pride of Performance award for his outstanding contributions to journalism.

This latest recognition further strengthens his position as a prominent voice in international sports media and enhances Pakistan’s presence on influential global platforms.

Widespread celebration in journalism community

The news has been met with widespread celebration within Pakistan’s journalistic community.

Muhammad Asghar Azeem, Secretary General of PSWF, called the honour a “moment of immense pride,” noting that Malik’s success reflects the talent and hard work present in Pakistan’s sports media sector.

In a joint statement, PSWF officials said this recognition would not only improve Pakistan’s standing in global sports journalism but also burnish the country’s international image.

Governor Kundi congratulates Malik

Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi extended his congratulations to Malik, stating that the Lifetime Honorary Membership is a testament to his personal dedication, professional excellence, and meaningful contributions to sports journalism.

The Governor emphasised that this honour is a source of pride not just for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but for all of Pakistan, and noted that receiving the award at the AIPS Congress in Lausanne demonstrates the growing international appreciation for Pakistani journalists and their abilities.

Hope for future contributions

The Governor expressed confidence that Amjad Aziz Malik will continue to advance sports journalism with the same dedication and help bring further recognition to the country in the years ahead.
