RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has provided nearly $60 million in fresh financial assistance to help Yemen’s internationally recognised government meet salary obligations for public sector employees, as the Kingdom continues efforts to support economic stability in the country.

Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al-Jaber, said on Friday that more than SR224 million ($59.7 million) had been released under directives from the Saudi leadership and overseen by Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman.

The funds were channelled through the Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen (SPDRY) and are intended to ease the Yemeni government’s budgetary pressures and ensure the continued payment of state employees.

In a statement posted on X, Al-Jaber said the support would help sustain government finances, provide foreign currency liquidity and contribute to the stability of the Yemeni riyal. He added that the assistance would also bolster efforts to maintain essential public services and support broader economic recovery initiatives.

The latest funding comes shortly after Saudi Arabia and Yemen signed a separate $150 million agreement aimed at supplying oil derivatives to electricity generation stations in several Yemeni provinces.

The energy initiative, financed through SPDRY in cooperation with Yemen’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy, is designed to strengthen power generation capacity and improve access to electricity services for communities across the country.

Saudi Arabia has remained one of the principal backers of Yemen’s internationally recognised government, providing financial assistance, development programmes and humanitarian support to help sustain public institutions and facilitate economic recovery amid years of conflict.

The Kingdom’s latest measures underscore its continuing commitment to supporting Yemen’s economy and preserving essential services as the country faces persistent financial and humanitarian challenges.
