Saudi Arabia Nominates Dr. Hanan Hassan Balkhy for Position of WHO Director-General

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has nominated Dr Hanan Hassan Balkhy for the position of Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the 2027–2032 term.

The nomination reflects the Kingdom’s recognition of the WHO’s vital role in strengthening global health security and helping countries develop more efficient, sustainable and resilient health systems capable of addressing emerging and future health challenges, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Monday.

Saudi Arabia said the move also underscores its commitment to multilateral cooperation in global health and its continued contribution to international efforts to strengthen the prevention, preparedness and response to health emergencies.

Saudi Arabia reaffirms support for universal health coverage

The Kingdom also reaffirmed its support for advancing universal health coverage and expanding access to essential health services for vulnerable communities, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Dr Balkhy brings extensive scientific and leadership experience in public health, infectious diseases, infection prevention and control, health security, health systems and international health.

She has also held senior leadership roles within the WHO at the country, regional and global levels.

Most notably, she has been elected as Regional Director of the World Health Organisation for the Eastern Mediterranean and was the first Assistant Director-General for Antimicrobial Resistance.

Throughout her career, Dr Balkhy has played a key role in developing and implementing a range of health initiatives and policies focused on protecting communities and enhancing the capacity of health systems.

Saudi Arabia said its nomination of Dr Balkhy reflects the Kingdom’s ambition to support the WHO’s continued development, strengthen its ability to address the needs of member states, and promote the principles of equity, transparency and efficiency.

The Kingdom also expressed its commitment to fostering effective international partnerships to advance global health, improve well-being and address shared health challenges.
